How to train as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist

The six year post graduate training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology consists of:

  • Four year planned rotation between 3 hospitals, (includes a six month attachment at a provincial hospital), leading to the membership examination of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).
  • Two years of elective training which may be undertaken at an institution of the trainee's choice in New Zealand, or at an overseas hospital, with College approval.

Regular teaching and mock examinations are provided at National Women's Hospital and all trainees in the Auckland area are encouraged to attend.

In Auckland, the following posts are available:

  • 15 at National Women's Hospital
  • 7 at Middlemore Hospital
  • 3 at North Shore Hospital
  • 1 research post at National Women's Hospital

Note: Part-time training/job-sharing must be approved by the College and the DHBs.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • have 3 years post-graduate experience, including 12 months recognised O&G experience as an SHO or Registrar
  • must be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • must be enrolled with the College
