Palliative care supports people and their families who are dealing with life-threatening illness and helps them to live as comfortably as possible. A palliative care approach aims to improve quality of life by addressing social, psychological and spiritual needs as well as physical needs such as managing pain and other distressing symptoms.
Palliative Care embraces the holistic care model and the Palliative Medicine trainee is an integral part of the multi-professional team which includes nurses, social workers, counsellors, chaplains, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The Auckland region offers an excellent opportunity to work across different healthcare settings as part of a multi-professional team.
Suitably qualified doctors can gain Registrar experience or vocationally train in Palliative Medicine. Training sites accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Chapter of Palliative Medicine are located in hospices and public hospitals in each of the 3 Auckland Regional District Health Boards (DHBs) (Auckland DHB, Counties Manukau DHB and Waitemata DHB).

There are positions for three trainees on the Auckland Region Palliative Medicine Advanced Training Rotation. Each of the three regional DHBs is the primary host for one trainee. Rotation between DHBs enables trainees to fulfil the training requirements specified by the Chapter of Palliative Medicine (RACP) in the Advanced Training Program Handbook.
