Careers

Pathology is the branch of medicine involved in understanding causes and processes of disease. Investigations are made by performing tests on various tissues including blood and other body fluids, and samples taken during surgery or as part of a medical examination.

Pathologists interpret the results of these tests, which may show the cause or severity of illness or may be used to monitor treatment once diagnosis has been made.

The Auckland Anatomical Pathology registrars are employed on a regional basis and rotate around each of the Auckland hospital laboratories every four months. The placement of registrars is decided on a yearly basis by the Supervisor of Training to take into account the training needs of all of the registrars.

Four monthly rotations include general Anatomical Pathology runs at Auckland, Middlemore and North Shore Hospital laboratories, and separate Forensic, Cytology and Paediatric Pathology rotations. Registrars on general runs at the three hospital laboratories participate in a roster system for 'cut-up' and reporting.

Sixteen Anatomical Pathology registrars are currently employed in the Auckland Region.

Each centre has its own unique learning opportunities and a wealth of consultant experience.

Who can I talk to and where to next?

@nodeName

There are usually more applications than there are positions and candidates are strongly advised to ensure that a legible, up-to-date CV accompanies the application along with any relevant supporting documents. The candidate must state clearly his/her preferred sub-discipline in Pathology in rank order if more than one sub-discipline is being applied for, or “general Pathology” if indeed the intent is to train in all sub-disciplines. Candidates may be required to present for an interview.
